Dimitri Merejkowski The Death of the Gods

Hamilton Wright Mabie Norse Mythology

Rooted in an oral tradition, fantastic sagas of Norse mythology found their way into print seven centuries ago, in documents known as the Eddas. This book presents 17 of the most popular tales, from the creation of the world to the death of the gods and the world’s destruction.Masterfully retold, the legends include Odin's trip to Mimer in search of knowledge, the making of Thor's hammer, the loss of Idun's wondrous apples, and the task of securing the dreaded Fenris-wolf with unbreakable silken twine devised from «the sound of a cat’s footsteps, the roots of the mountains, the breath of a fish, and the sinew of a bear.» Here, too, are accounts of «The Wooing of Gerd,» «Thor Goes a Fishing,» «The Death of Balder,» «How Loki Was Punished,» «The Twilight of the Gods,» and «The New Earth.»

Lord Dunsany When the Gods Slept

There in Pegana lay the gods asleep, and in a corner lay the Power of the gods alone upon the floor, a thing wrought of black rock and four words graven upon it, whereof I might not give thee any clue, if even I should find it—four words of which none knoweth. Some say they tell of the opening of a flower towards dawn, and others say they concern earthquakes among hills, and others that they tell of the death of fishes, and others that the words be these: Power, Knowledge, Forgetting, and another word that not the gods themselves may ever guess.

Vinoth Ramachandra Gods That Fail, Revised Edition

The globalizing world of late modernity is heavily awash with pseudo-gods. Gods That Fail provocatively deploys the theological concept of idolatry to explore the ways in which these gods blind their devotees and wreak suffering and dehumanization. Many of these pseudo-gods have infiltrated the life of the Church and compromised its witness. Combining lively social critique with fresh expositions of familiar biblical stories, this book engages with a variety of secular discourses as well as the sub-Christian practices that accompany and undermine Christian involvement in the public square.

Carus Titus Of The Nature of Things - The Original Classic Edition

On the Nature of Things is the only surviving work of the Roman philosopher Lucretius, born in 99 BC. In On the Nature of Things, Lucretius sought to liberate his fellow Romans from their fear of the gods, and their fear of death.
Lucretius argued that the gods are not directly involved in life, and therefore there is no need to appease them; he also argued that death is the end of a human beings body and soul, and therefore there is no point in fearing it. An unforgettable amalgamation of insight, now in a new English translation.
On the Nature of Things deserves the highest recommendation especially for public and college library collections.

Anatole France The Gods Will Have Blood (The Gods are Athirst)

Anatole France's work «Les dieux ont soif» translates to «The Gods Will Have Blood» or «The Gods are Athirst.» Both translations of the title accurately depict the nature of this novel set during the French Revolution. Young artist Évariste Gamelin is the right-hand man of Jacobin, Marat, and Robespierre and eventually becomes appointed as a juror on the Revolutionary Tribunal during the heinous Reign of Terror. Though Gamelin fully believes in the ideas of revolution and liberty, he uses his position of power to terrorize his friends and family who do not agree with his zealous ideals. Yet his bloodthirsty nature is put to an end when he, along with his mentor Robespierre, is beheaded during the aftermath of the Thermidorian Reaction. «The Gods Will Have Blood» was published in 1912, and author Anatole France received the Nobel Prize for Literature in honor of his literary achievements. The text shows the dangers a fervently angry country and the terror that can arise when the public is allowed to dole out its own version of justice with random death sentences. It shows the consequences when humanity is consumed by an idea, even a good idea, that is allowed to become more important than the people who hold it.
